Balance board trainers are a piece of fitness equipment designed to help improve coordination, agility, and balance. They are relatively inexpensive, but highly effective and gaining popularity. Most balance boards look like a small surf board or skate board. They are mounted on a rubber roller or a sphere, and the idea is to stand atop the board without letting the sides touch the ground. Many skiers and surf boarders use this type of training as a substitute for their actual sport, or to specifically improve their skills. While navigating a balance board is uncomfortable at first, most people with an average level of fitness can maintain their balance within five minutes or so. The challenge, of course, is to stay atop the board for progressively longer periods of time. The key is to keep your upper body as still as possible, using only your lower body to maintain your stance. Not only is this great physical training for your core muscles, but it also teaches and trains your brain to concentrate on balancing. And while it may seem like a simple activity, trust us, staying atop a balance board for five minutes is a really challenging workout!
