Congestive heart failure is an illness that prevents the heart from pumping enough blood to the body’s organs. Causes are numerous and include:
- past heart attack
- coronary artery disease
- infection occurring in the valves or muscle of the heart
- congenital heart defects
- high blood pressure
- disease of the valves of the heart
All of which can cause the heart not to function as efficiently as it should and consequently do not allow the patient to exert any effort without becoming short of breath and/or tired. The condition can be treated in most cases, if diagnosed promptly.
