The Jack-o’-lantern tradition originates from an 18th century Irish folk tale. The folk tale is one of an Irishman named Jack.
Jack was a trickster who enticed Satan into climbing up an apple tree. Jack then carved the symbol of the Christian cross in the trunk of the apple tree. This supposedly caused Satan to be trapped in the tree.
Jack dies and was denied access to Heaven because of bad deeds. Satan, having remembered what Jack did to him, would not let him into Hell because of his trickery. Jack was doomed to walk on earth forever.
Satan gave Jack a piece of coal to help light the path he walked. Jack had a turnip he had been eating which he hollowed out and placed the piece of coal in it. So, our traditional Jack-o’-Latern originated from Jack of an Irish folk tale carrying a piece of coal in a hollowed-out turnip.
