But frogs have much more fun. The Princess and The Frog is a start to finish joy. It proves that 2 can be a lot more fun than 3, when gifted film-makers put old-fashioned snap back into animation. The lines are freer here, the character motions a lot more supple, the sensation of fun unfettered. The movie is a triumph for its directors and co-writers.
The Big Easy (New Orleans) and its boggy outreaches in the 1910s and ’20s are the locales for The Princes and The Frog, whose heroine, Tiana is a cooking prodigy who hopes and dreams of starting her own restaurant. She entertains the attentions of the dashing Maldonian Prince Naveen but he’s fallen under a spell of the black magical Dr. Facilier. The fateful kiss ships Tiana and Naveen – now frogs – into the bayou in which they meet swap creatures Louis, a warm and friendly, trumpet-playing alligator: the Cajun firefly Ray: and the 197-year-old blind seer Mama Odie whose gifts might be the energy to bring back Tiana and Maveen to human race.
